2007-2008 Editor in Chief of The University News elected: Lewis to take the reins

The editorial board of The University News gathered last Sunday to elect an editor in chief for the next academic year. Current arts editor Katie Lewis ran unopposed and was elected in a virtually unanimous vote. Lewis is a junior in the College of Arts and Sciences, majoring in English.

Lewis was motivated to pursue the position in order to ensure the creation of acompetent weekly product. “I decided to run for editor in chief because the newspaper needs to be revamped,” she said. “As the leader of next year’s editorial board, I will have the capability to implement the necessary changes.”

One of the specific changes Lewis plans to enact includes streamlining the process of creating each newspaper: “Production of the paper could run more smoothly, which would enable us to offer the University community a better product.”

Lewis also looks forward to establishing greater involvement with the communication department, maintaining an open dialogue with the administration and striving to better reflect the opinions and offerings of the University community.

After writing for The University News as a sophomore and serving as arts editor as a junior, Lewis has come to appreciate the unique opportunities that the organization offers Saint Louis University students.

“This is a learning experience for all involved. The great thing about KSLU, SLU TV and The University News is that these organizations offer hands-on experience in media areas that are neglected by academic majors,” she said.
Diana Benanti, the current editor in chief, believes that Lewis will excel at the pivotal position. “Katie is one of those rare people who can pick up any task or assignment and master it. It has been an unbelievable joy to work with her this year,” said Benanti.

“I know that she has the dedication, the enthusiasm and the wherewithal to serve in this position.”

Lewis praised Benanti’s indefatigable devotion to journalism and The University News, qualities she hopes to replicate throughout her term.

“I respect Diana, and I look forward to fostering the passionate level of dedication that she embodied this year,” Lewis said.

Lewis is currently interviewing candidates for next year’s editorial board.
