The Student Government Association at Saint Louis University passed a resolution on May 2 urging the Board of Trustees to postpone considerations to rescind The University News’ current charter.

The resolution passed unanimously.

The University News at Saint Louis University received word Monday, April 30, that the Board of Trustees would vote on May 5 to rescind their current charter.

The Editorial Board of The University News were informed of this decision by the Vice President of Student Development, Kent Porterfield, Ed.D. and Provost Joe Weixlmann, Ph.D.

The students were give two options: to take their production off-campus and become completely independent from the University, or to operate under a new charter, which Porterfield presented to the students.

The new charter would make The University News a “University sponsored publication.” The new charter creates two new positions, a student media coordinator who will oversee operations and a newspaper production adviser. The student editors and the editor in chief, under the new charter, will be nominated through the advisory board and approved by the Vice President for Student Development.

Currently, The University News editor in chief is elected by a majority vote of the editorial board in April, and the editor in chief hand-picks the editorial board.

The current charter that goes to vote on May 5 is controlled by the Board of Trustees-any change to the charter must be approved by the full Board. The new charter will be held solely by the Office of Student Development.

Late in the afternoon on May 2, The University News received a second draft of the new charter, to which some changes were made. The changes were made without formal input from The University News editorial board.
