Black Eyed Peas’ Will.I.Am breaks out on his own with solo release

The Black Eyed Peas hip-hop front-man Will.I.Am’s new solo album Songs About Girls provides two key points of information for its listeners. First, Will.I.Am is a very talented and creative artist. Second, he should use that talent and creativity to stick with his hip-hop group the Black Eyed Peas, the more famous group that includes well-known pop and R&B singer Fergie.

Will.I.Am created Girls in an attempt to solidify his position in the hip-hop world. He also used the album to experiment with his own creativity, away from BEP. Though he has done the majority of his work with and has become successful with BEP, Girls helps to boost Will.I.Am’s status in the music industry.

The album is almost entirely solely the work of Will.I.Am, featuring only one other mainstream artist-Snoop Dogg. This track, entitled “The Donque Song,” has a great dance-floor beat and a quick tempo that adds to a selection of very rhythmic and vibrant songs on the album.

“I Got It From My Mama” is Will.I.Am’s most popular hit. The song, which has already made its way up the Billboard music charts, is a very upbeat song with some great tunes and instrumentals to compliment great rhyming throughout the entire song.

“Impatient” stays true to its name, making the listener actually feel impatient due to multiple long pauses without any lyrics or music. The disco beat in this track keeps it interesting, but only after the initial frustration.

“One More Chance” is a fairly slow song with great background beats that are appealing to the ears. In this track, Will.I.Am sings about his desire for another chance in his past relationship.

Unlike most of BEP’s albums, Girls contains a large amount of serious lyrics. Foregoing the not-so-meaningful route of songs like “My Humps,” many of Will.I.Am’s songs pertain to long-term relationships. Will.I.Am touches on this matter in “Heartbreaker,” where he talks about breaking his ex’s heart.

Since founding the Black Eyed Peas in 1989, Will.I.Am has released three solo albums: Lost Change (2001), Must B 21 (2003) and now Girls (Sept. 25). Each prior album had decent sales, but neither was as successful as Girls has been in its first two weeks since the release date.

Overall, Girls is a rhythmic, original and very creative album. Although it seems as if some songs were forced into the album and have poor flow and tune, Will.I.Am proves that he is capable of producing a popular and successful solo album. This being said, he should continue to produce albums with BEP, along with producing creative and entertaining solo albums like Girls to continue his success in the hip-hop industry.
