The VOICES project is sponsoring its fourth presentation in the “Faith and Science” series next week. The presentation is called “The Building Blocks of Creation: Reading Genesis 1-2 from Different Theological Perspectives,” and will feature two Saint Louis University professors arguing for and against the theory of evolution.
Two speakers will address their interpretations of the first two books of Genesis in the Bible and debate about their opposing perspectives. Supporting the theistic evolutionary theory is a member of the biology faculty, Joseph Fortier, S.J., and defending the theory of intelligent design is Michael McClymond, Ph.D., a faculty member from the theological studies department.
“This debate is about life’s big questions, like, ‘How did we get here?’ and we hope that people will understand how the speakers’ interpretations of the Bible and its text leads them to their perspectives of theistic evolution or intelligent design,” said Mary Beth Gallagher, one of the coordinators of the event.
“It is part of the bigger question of faith and reason: How do faith and science fit together, how are they compatible?”
The debate will be from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Humanities Building, Room 142 on Tuesday, Feb. 26.
