Time travel has become a reality.
For one night only, on Saturday, May 3, the Black Student Alliance is holding “Design of the Decade,” a student-run fashion show. The tenth-annual charity show will feature a variety of fashions from the 1920s to the present day. The event will also highligh African-American popular culture through fashion.
“Everything recycles itself,” said BSA Fashion Show Director and senior Erica Jordan. “[This show] is touching on the past-not just on today’s fashion-and focus[es] on trends of previous times.”
Fourty-seven student models will participate in the event. All clothing items used are donated or borrowed from stores in the Delmar Loop, the St. Louis Galleria and small boutique shops.
“It’s cool to see how fashion has changed and comes back from the past,” fashion-show model freshman Erica Hammond said. “I’m excited for the show.”
The proceeds from this year’s fashion show will go to the charity Keep a Child Alive.
“KCA is the most direct way that we can effectively contribute to the relief of this horrendous AIDS epidemic that we face,” said sophomore Minh Quan Huynh, marketing president for the fashion show and president of Saint Louis University’s KCA chapter. “Every dollar donated will be used to buy antiretroviral medication for treatment.”
KCA is a national organization that’s mission is to work to provide medication for families with AIDS in Africa and India.
“It’s a huge crisis that needs attention,” Jordan said.
The BSA Fashion Show will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. at the St. Louis Room in the Busch Student Center. Tickets are $8 at the door. Tickets for $10 will also be available. The purchase of a $10 ticket includes access to an after party at Salsaritas, also in the BSC.
