White ‘votes for love’ as he crosses nation

It’s a good thing Matt White is jump starting his career. It’s too bad he couldn’t jump start his tour bus.

After the bus broke down, White, a New York City-based singer-song writer currently on his “Vote for Love” tour in partnership with clothing retailer The Gap, talked to The University News about his music and his ambitions for his career and his political activism on the eve of the political election.

“Love,” White’s newest single that begins with a lighthearted rhythm before flowing into a refreshing melody, serves as the centerpiece for the current fall tour. As part of the tour, he visited a number of U.S. cities, playing in a select number of Gap stores.

“We collaborated with the Gap on this project,” White said. “It’s basically about engaging people to get out there and be proactive.”

White performed a special election eve show in New York’s Bowery Ballroom on Nov. 3.

White is excited by the fervor of the group of young voters he has met during course of his tour.

“It’s great seeing fans and bringing more people to the polls,” White said.

He focused his tour on meeting his fan base while also igniting more excitement in college-aged voters.

In contrast to his newly cultivated political activism, White began his career at an early age and continues to pursue it avidly.

Despite his early start in the business, White feels that there’s hope for any college student who might be interested in pursuing music.

“Keep on creating and writing,” White said. “It’s never too late to do what you want to do.”

In fact, White taught himself to play guitar in college when he could not fit a piano into his dorm room.

“It’s all about keeping the creative process going,” he said.
