Let Us Introduce You To … Mike Reddy

For the perfect balance of scholastics, worldly involvement and compassion look no further than senior Mike Reddy. While participating in numerous programs on campus and balancing two majors and a minor, Reddy manages a pre-med schedule and still plans to graduate this spring. If all this wasn’t enough, he also finds time for another one of his passions-Grand Market wraps.

“On average, I have four to five a week,” he said.

Reddy has always been interested in volunteering, but SLU was able to help him find a more international focus.

“I’m all over the place,” he said. “I choose things I’m really passionate about.”

And he truly is everywhere, from the Mass choir to helping with SLU Community Action Program trips. He is most well known for his involvement in One World, a social justice organization that strives to inform students about important global issues, where he serves as the vice president.

Reddy is also a recruiter for Teach for America, a program that trains and sends teachers to school districts in impoverished areas for two years.

Reddy also helps at La Clinica, a Hispanic clinic that helps low income Hispanics in the St. Louis area.

He also leads SLU CAP trips, which are sponsored by SLU based on volunteering. The trips focus on helping less fortunate areas across America. This spring break, Reddy assisted on the SLU CAP trip to Arizona. Through these trips, he has helped out in Appalachia and New Orleans.

“We went to New Orleans just four months after Katrina,” Reddy said.

These trips were mainly focused on rebuilding and collecting debris.

“Nothing had been done to the houses yet [in New Orleans],” Reddy said. “I’ve never smelled anything worse.”

Reddy and his team tore down houses and assisted rebuilding them. During these trips, he was able to witness and experience situations that an average college student wouldn’t see outside of St. Louis.

“Appalachia is like the third world of the U.S.,” Reddy said.

In addition, Reddy has also worked with orphans with AIDS in India. These experiences sparked certain emotions.

His volunteering will not stop after graduation, either. After completing his majors in Spanish and international studies and a minor in psychology, Reddy plans on following through with Teach for America, in June. He also has medical school on his mind and has been accepted to Temple in Pennsylvania.

It may be impossible to grasp, but Reddy still has time to relax. He enjoys playing racquetball and exploring St. Louis. And he can be found hanging out at Humphrey’s during his spare time.

“I’m just trying to be a senior,” he said.
