Saint Louis University students are going back in time.
This year’s Homecoming week, sponsored by the Student Activities Board, will feature a 1950s theme.
“We were brainstorming ideas and different events that could go with those ideas, and [Zack Dorow] and I really liked this theme and went with it,” Sarah Pingel, Homecoming co-chair, said.
Homecoming will take place during the week of Sept. 19. Some of the themed events include a Sock Hop dance at the Clocktower and a Quad day with activities such as hula-hoops and wiffleball.
Pingel also said that throughout the week, the Residence Hall Association will be hosting a hall decorating contest; voting for Homecoming Court will take place on Banner. Giveaways may also occur
“Because of other organizations on campus such as Billikens After Dark. athletics, Greek life . and many more, we will have an event every day of Homecoming week,” Cara Crowley, SAB president, said. “This has not happened for several years.”
The Commuter Student Association is one of the organizations involved in planning this year’s Homecoming events. CSA is co-sponsoring a Capture the Flag event, the annual movie night and the golf cart parade.
“For movie night, we hope to have a service to bring food right to people,” Nick Hassall, CSA vice president, said. “We’re also trying to get the golf carts in the Quad [for the movie].”
Toward the end of the previous spring semester, SAB sent out an email to chartered student organizations to see who would be interested in participating in the summer planning. Crowley said that this is the first year SAB has had such a committee and that there was great response from student groups.
“We made it a point to get other organizations involved in this year’s Homecoming so there is a lot more collaboration,” Pingel said.
A new aspect to Homecoming this year is that some of the events will be broadcast over the web for students and alumni who aren’t able to be on campus. The details of the broadcast itself are still in the works, but the events to be broadcast are the golf cart parade, the Homecoming Court announcements and the fireworks show.
“Considering that Homecoming is for all of SLU’s students, we came up with the idea to broadcast a few of SLU’s beloved Homecoming events online,” Crowley said. “The goal of this project is to let Billikens all over the world know that we miss them back home.”
Homecoming kicks off Saturday with the Sock Hop dance at the Clocktower, beginning at 8 p.m.
