Powell Symphony Hall, located in the Grand Boulevard theatre district, hosted a rendition of music from Blue Planet this past Sunday, Sept. 20, that truly lived up to the Symphony’s rich history.
Blue Planet is the British Broadcasting Company’s precursor to the more famous Planet Earth series. The BBC series, which aired on Discovery Channel from September to October in 2001, focuses on aquatic life and took over five years to make, involving nearly 200 shooting locations.
Immediately, scenes of a pod of blue whales appeared projected on a screen suspended in the theater. The Symphony played the opening theme of Blue Planet. The juxtaposition of sound and film was breathtaking. Conductor Ward Stare directed his symphony in perfect synchronization with the film.
Future performances of the Symphony are music from “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” on Oct. 10 and 11 and Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture” on Oct. 16 and 17.
