For the second time in three years, The University News has been recognized as the best overall college newspaper among the largest Universities in Missouri.
On April 14th, The University News received 21 awards including the title of “Division I Best Overall Newspaper” by the Missouri College Media Association at the annual awards ceremony, held this year at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Mo. The University News also claimed the title of “Best Overall Newspaper” and “Best in State” in 2009-10. Thirty-six Missouri colleges and universities were eligible for MCMA awards.
In addition to the ‘Best Overall Newspaper’ award, The University News took first place in the categories of Entertainment Review; Editorial Writing; and Regular Column. The organization received honorable mentions or placed among the top three in 17 other categories.
“I am extremely proud of what our organization has been able to accomplish in the last few years,” Editor-in-Chief Jonathan Ernst said. “We have provided the SLU community with award winning journalism and that is something that we can all be proud of.”
The schools competing in division I include the University of Missouri-Columbia, Missouri State University, Saint Louis University, the University of Missouri-Saint Louis, Washington University and the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
Each student publication vying for the title of “Best Overall Newspaper” submitted three newspapers to be judged on criteria such as story content, design, photography and community interest.
