The great city of St. Louis celebrates her 250th birthday this weekend and that means there are some incredible events all around town to celebrate the semiquincentennial.
Beginning Feb. 14 The Missouri History Museum will attempt to capture all of the memorable moments in one extensive exhibit that will feature 50 people, 50 places, 50 images, 50 moments and 50 objects. The History Museum’s “250 in 250” exhibit is free and will be on display for one full year so there’s no excuse not to catch it.
A birthday wouldn’t be much fun without cake, and a 250th certainly deserves a few extra layers and grandeur. In order to celebrate in style, artists from across the area have come together to paint 250 cakes for The Cakeway to the West. Each 4-foot cake is uniquely decorated and will be placed at a historic location in the city.
History buffs should head down to Laclede’s Landing this weekend to catch a reenactment of our city’s founding. Representatives of France, Spain, Canada and the Osage Indian Nation will gather at the St. Louis City Hall to join in the presentation that begins at 10:30 a.m. A narrator will walk spectators through the story of St. Louis’ origins followed by the unveiling of new downtown street signs using the original French names.
