At approximately 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 6, an argument occurred between a group of young men that quickly escalated into a shooting across from Saint Louis University’s north campus.
According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department (SLMPD), 16-year-old Darrell Price was shot and killed, and an unidentified 20-year-old male was shot and injured with no life-threatening injuries.
By the time SLMPD arrived, the suspects had left the scene.
“The 20-year-old man who was injured by gunfire was taken into custody related to this incident,” said SLMPD in a press release. “An 18-year-old man was also taken into custody after surrendering to police.”
The altercation happened in the rear parking lot of Jimmy John’s and Papa Johns off Laclede Avenue, just across the street from SLU’s Village Apartments and Vandeventer Field.
The off-campus student apartment complex, The Standard, faces the parking lot. Some Standard residents reported hearing yelling and gunshots from their units.
SLU’s Department of Public Safety (DPS) sent out alerts to students saying that there was a heavy police presence in the area. However, students did not receive any alerts mentioning shots being fired.
Joshua Johnson, director of special operations for SLU DPS, said that “shots fired” was not included in the campus alerts because the gunshots were not an imminent threat to campus since the suspects left the scene. Additionally, Johnson said that DPS chose not to mention gunfire to avoid causing unnecessary panic.
“If there is an active investigation going on, we have to respect that,” said Johnson. “We want to be transparent and informative.”
DPS was present at the scene with SLMPD.
SLMPD believes that there is no connection between those involved with the altercation and SLU, and that there is no additional threat to campus.
This is the second shooting this academic year to take place just off of SLU’s campus. DPS did not alert students when a man was shot by the apartments across from Reinert Hall in the early morning hours of Wednesday, Aug. 20.
