Pub Trial Extended Until End Of Month; Hours Of Operation Changed

The success of a five-day trial run has allowed the new, as-yet- unnamed pub in the Billiken Club to remain in operation until the end of the month.

Its existence beyond that is still uncertain.

“Overall, it was a success because students used it,” said Interim Vice Provost for Student Life Kathy Humphrey. “It’s there for socializing in a place where they’re comfortable.”

One change, however, will be put into effect. The original hours of 4 to 11 p.m. have been shortened to 7 to 11 p.m. This, according to Humphrey, is due to the lack of attendance during the originally scheduled hours.

“It was very dead from 4 to 7,” Humphrey said.

Humphrey added that when there was live entertainment, the pub was considerably busier. The opening night bands and last Thursday’s SAB presentation of comedian Jim Breuer attracted the largest attendances.

“It was a place for people to go after the show,” Humphrey said. “We’re going to try to increase [live entertainment] to at least once a week.”

Student Government Association Marguerite senator Nick Fagan also felt that student support of the pub was strong.

“I haven’t seen anything like that as far as that late on a weeknight,” Fagan said. “Things were really jamming towards the end of [opening] night.”

Fagan also noted that students are beginning to find entertainment on campus.

“At other universities this is the norm,” Fagan said. “It’s special, and I think it’s great. Student Life is presenting new things.

“Students are turning out and seeing that there are things going on.”

Fagan added his concerns on the pub’s finances. Apparently, students have not spent enough money to keep enough fund the pub.

Fagan said that it is not the intention of the pub to make money. However, if the deficit becomes too large, the pub would be forced to close and the money would be allocated towards other student activities.

Fagan hopes that students under the legal drinking age of 21 realize that non-alcoholic drinks are available as well as various food items, such as chicken wings and jalapeno poppers.

“The biggest thing is to get more people there,” Fagan said.

Comment cards are available in the pub, which ask for student feedback on what they would like to see in the pub.

“We had a lot of good feedback,” said Coordinator of Student Life Ashli Armstrong.

“A few suggested they look forward to its being more established. People said it went pretty well,” Armstrong added.

“I’ve never seen the BMC filled that much,” Fagan said. “I thought it was a huge success.”
