SAB Plans Spring Fever, Other Events For Remainder Of Spring

Although the end of the school year is quickly approaching, the Student Activities Board is busy preparing events to keep SLU’s social calendar full. From movies to comedians and even Spring Fever, the SAB has been saving the best for last.

The biggest event of the academic year is Spring Fever. This spring, the SAB is blocking off 100 yards of Laclede Street to host a party on May 4.

“I’ve been working on it since October,” said Libby Reichert, a major outdoor events co-chair.

This year, Spring Fever boasts rides such as the scrambler, the buccaneer, and the salt and pepper shakers.

“We’re putting a lot of time and money into it to give the students what they want, what they’ve been asking for,” Reichert said. “We’re really excited about it and think that all of our strenuous work is going to pay off.”

The block party is being held in conjunction with several area businesses. Local vendors from the Loop will be there. Laclede Street Bar and Grill is providing the beer garden.

As a pre-cinco de mayo party, there will be both a main and side stage with local bands.

Since the event involves the whole community, it’s a good idea for SLU organizations to get involved, according to Laura Hobart, internal vice-president. She said that anyone interested should stop by the SAB office for information.

In addition to Spring Fever, the SAB is presenting their usual array of movies and films.

With the aid of a new technical system, the Network Event Theater, the SAB will be able to present movies before they are released in theaters. Just as new releases are shown at the Tivoli, new movies will be presented in Kelly Auditorium as soon as the technical changes are in place. Also, through a satellite system, other schools will be viewing the movies simultaneously.

According to SAB Films’ Chair Jen Kulp, some of the movies will include High Fidelity, with John Cusack, and American Psycho. Also, the summer blockbuster American Pie will be presented on the big screen outside in Quad I on April 27.

In keeping pace with the notable comedians of last semester-namely Jim Breuer-the SAB will have more comical events, such as an open-mike night at the end of March.

Also, Kevin Meaney will perform in the pub on April 6. Students may remember Kevin Meaney from his appearances on Comedy Central. Meaney has won multiple awards and has hosted a variety of comedy shows.

“We’re really proud of the comedy series this year,” Hobart said. “We worked really hard with the Funny Bone Comedy Club.”
