Project SLU2000 Residence Hall Upgrades Scheduled For Summer

A major step in the SLU2000 project will be taken this summer, as the University will begin “extensive upgrades” of the residence halls.

The most work will be done in Reinert, Griesedieck and Marguerite Halls. Floor and wall work and the replacement of windows in Fusz and Notre Dame Halls was completed over Spring Break.

“The buildings need to be the best they can be,” Assistant Vice President of Facilities Planning Denise Taylor said. “It’s always a good idea to make sure facilities are in good condition.”

Reinert Hall will receive the most attention. Probably the biggest change in the Reinert will be the replacement of the carpet with tile.

“It comes down to what lasts longer,” Vice Provost for Student Development Kathy Humphrey said. “I know there are a lot of people upset about that. It’s tough for me, too. I do have to be worried about how the place looks.”

New doors, window drapes and wall coverings will be installed. All of the bathrooms in the former Ramada Inn will receive facelifts with the installation of new floors, mirrors, light and plumbing fixtures and vanities. The closets will be removed and replaced with wardrobes.

The changes in Reinert are scheduled to be completed by the August opening.

The Marguerite Hall renovation, however, will not be completed in time for fall classes. Most of the work scheduled for Marguerite is mechanical upgrades, which are not visible to students. Air-conditioning will be added to the rooms, as well as bathroom changes similar to those in Reinert Hall. One wing of the residence hall will be completed this summer, with the other wing scheduled for completion in the summer of 2001.

The top floors in Griesedieck Hall will be upgraded this summer, with the lower floors being completed next summer. The changes will be new light fixtures and vanities, painting and floor work, and new medicine cabinets. Additional electrical outlets will be installed in each room.

No changes are scheduled for individual rooms in Clemens or Walsh with the exception of sprinkler upgrades.

The entire complex will receive new windows with custom-made frames. This work will begin in the rooms.

If time permits at the end of the summer, new windows will also be installed in the stairwells.
