From the lipstick, to the socks, to the earrings of Saint Louis University Theatre’s latest production Dark Ride, junior Colleen Call has been responsible for designing the look on the stage.
She has been responsible for every aspect of the costume design process as she works with students with whom she once acted on the stage. Becoming an actor was always a dream to Call; however, she wanted to explore different aspects of theater.
She did so as a light board manager, stage manager and a costume mistress. This experience as a costume mistress freshman year sparked a great interest to follow costuming and fashion design.
“I have done everything and I have found this as an area I would really like to pursue,” she said. Call’s interest in color and fabric made the job as costume shop supervisor natural to her.
Call committed long hours to maintaining and organizing all the clothing that the actors wear in SLU’s productions. She looks at costumes artistically and feels that it is an opportunity to help the actors bring their characters to life. Working closely with the actors, she helps to create the most successful designs.
Call was frantically working this week to put the finishing touches on Wednesday night’s opening performance of Dark Ride. As the lights went up, Call’s work was the first thing the audience saw. And it will definitely not the last costume work that audiences will see. Call will be back next year creating, buying and mending costumes for the stage again.
