Activities Board Packs Calendar

The Student Activities Board at St. Louis University has been busy lately. And that may be an understatement.

Ryan Murphy, SAB President, has outlined a September that is crammed full of activities. Some events are returning favorites, but many surprises are also planned.

To begin the school year, comedian John Pinette will perform in the Saint Louis Room, Busch Memorial Center on Saturday, Aug. 26 at 9 p.m. Pinette made an appearance on the last episode of Seinfeld.

It is time, once again, to pack the Quad with moviegoers on couches and blankets. On Monday, the renowned “Drive-In Movie” will take place in the Griesedieck quad. Phone booths in the Quad herald the playing of the movie-Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure.

On Friday, Sept. 8, Washington University will host the annual Fusion party, sponsored by five area schools: Washington University, Saint Louis University, Webster University, University of Missouri at St. Louis, and Fontbonne College. Shuttles will be available for transportation between Washington University and SLU.

On Sept. 9, SAB will bring HBO’s K.O. Nation to the Billiken Club. K.O. Nation is an interactive virtual boxing event that allows students at SLU to compete with students at other universities around the nation. Contestants pummel a punching bag, which is their “opponent.” A satellite feed links each university to its competitor.

The much-anticipated Network Entertainment Television (NET TV) will make movies available to students one week prior to the public release date. On Sept. 13, the first movie will be Almost Famous.

On Tuesday, Sept. 19, the Real World Reunion Tour will stop by SLU for a question- and-answer session. Issues such as diversity, sexual orientation, relationships, and many others are set for discussion, though students may ask other questions as well. Six cast members from four seasons will be appearing: David from Seattle, Heather from New York, David and Melissa from New Orleans and Amaya and Colin from Hawaii.

Homecoming events are set for the Sept. 22 and 23. Tom Deluca, the hypnotist, will embarrass SLU students on stage again. The homecoming dance will be held on Friday, Sept. 22 at the Union Station Hyatt Regency Hotel. Tickets are available in the Office of Student Life.

The homecoming match against Soutwest Missouri State will be held on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Hermann Stadium. In addition, a golf cart parade will travel through campus and around the track before the game. Following the game, there will be a fireworks display and a live concert.

SAB has planned a full calendar of events for the beginning of the school year, especially considering a drastic reduction in funds from the previous year.

“We have a surprise coming in October. It’s not definite, but we’re hoping. It will be big,” said Murphy.
