BMC Lower Level To Remain Open 24 Hours

Students pulling all-nighters have a new place to study.

Beginning Sept. 1, the lower level of the Busch Memorial Center will be open for 24 hour student use.

“We’ve been tossing around the idea of an all-night study area for several years now,” said Jay Perry, Student Government Association president.

Perry brought the idea to Vice President for Student Development, Kathy Humphrey last year. Originally, the idea dealt only with a study area, but now the coffee shop will be open 24 hours during the week as well.

“The Billiken Club should be a quiet study area,” Perry said. “If this proves successful, a computer lab might also be installed in the BMC.”

“I am all for it as long as the students use the facilities,” said Humphrey, who has high hopes for the success of the 24-hour BMC. However, she stresses that this is a trial.

“The question is whether students want to be inside Busch Memorial between the hours of 3 a.m. and 7 a.m.,” Humphrey said. “If the students use it, we’ll continue keeping it open. If they don’t, we’ll simply dismiss the idea.”

So far, students have liked the idea of a place to study throughout the night.

Sophomore Kristen Saunders said the idea would be ideal for students studying with commuters. “It’s good to have a place to go that’s comfortable when studying or just hanging out,” Saunders said.

“I think that it’s a great place to go to study especially when the library closes,” said Annie Tobin, junior. “It’s better to leave the BMC open all night than to close it for just a few hours.”
