DPS Releases Info Via Site And E-mail

“Nobody can say now that we’re not getting the info out,” said Jack Titone, director of the Department of Public Safety.

Whether via the Internet, e-mail, or hard copy, students at Saint Louis University will have a lot of information on DPS.

Under the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statisitcs Act, DPS is making the crime statistics of the last three years available.

Next week all students, staff and faculty will receive an e-mailed version of the DPS Annual Campus Security Report.

This report will cover University crime-handling procedures, DPS services and three years of crime statistics.

In addition to the campus-wide e-mail, the report can be accessed from the new DPS Web site going online mid-next week.

The Web site, a project begun last year, will include a listing of DPS services, updated crime logs, a monthly safety tip and crime alerts.

The site will also contain the new Secret Witness program. Secret Witness will allow students to report information about crimes anonymously to DPS.

On the site, students enter the information into a text box and submit the form. The form is then sent to DPS in an e-mail. The IP address of the computer transmitting the information is not included in the e-mail.

“The program is used by many police departments,” Titone explained. “It gives people a chance to give us information they know, but don’t want to say publicly.”

DPS Computer Support Donald Martin said, “Public safety manpower has increased by 10,000, so to speak.”

Titone added, “The more eyes and ears we have out there, the safer the campus.”

He explained that the information submitted through Silent Witness would serve as a catalyst for further investigation, or perhaps simply heightened awareness. In a sexual assault, he noted that a student may not want to come forward but would protect others by alerting DPS.

“This is not for someone to blow the whistle on their roommate,” Titone noted.

Martin emphasized, “If it stops one crime, then it has done its job.”

Another portion of the site will be dedicated to monthly safety tips from the Community Outreach Policing Officers.

“The safety tip will be something of a concern to the University, such as informing students to have DPS engrave their social security numbers on their bicycles,” Titone said.

One final part of the Web site will allow students to voice their opinion about DPS through an e-mail sent to whichever DPS officer the student desires, including Titone.

Titone noted, “Nobody can say now that we’re not getting the info out there.”
