Programs And Intramurals Kick-Off

The 2000-2001 school year promises to be eventful at the Simon Recreation Center with the return of several existing programs, as well as a series of new ones being offered to students and faculty.

According to Sam Kelner, coordinator of intramural sports, sports teams, and special events, “The Rec Center and its staff are here to facilitate the student. We have great plans for the year and have numerous opportunities for student participation.”

One of the most popular programs sponsored by the Rec Center is the Intramural Program Competitions are open to all students whether they live on campus or commute.

The Intramurals are entirely student-oriented. Students serve as referees and winners earn championship T-shirts.

For the fall semester, sports such as volleyball, softball, flag football and outdoor soccer offer a variety of events for students.

New this year, the competition will include quick ball, a game resembling wiffleball.

In addition to the team sports there are other events open for individual competition.

“There are tremendous amounts of individual sports such as squash, tennis and the home run derby for students,” says Kelner.

“There is something for everyone,” he added.

Intramurals are a favorite with the student body for a number of reasons.

Dan Boyle and Mukund Ventuopalan, both sophomores, have participated in the program in the past and plan to do so again.

“I would recommend it to freshmen. It is a great way to meet new people,” says Venutopalan.

Boyle adds, “I like the competition and having fun with friends.”

The deadline for registration is Monday, Sept. 11.

Yoga, swing dancing and spinning classes are also available at the Rec Center. These classes run throughout the semester.
