The Student Government Association began the year with their first meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 13.
During the open forum, Department of Public Safety Officer Courtney Tillman spoke about Mission Defense.
In this plan, DPS has issued every member of the freshman class a whistle to be used in case of an emergency. Students were warned that if the whistle was sounded when it’s not an emergency, they would be fined $100.
“This is a proactive approach to safety,” Tillman said.
Within five years, every student should be equipped with the SLU whistle.
Following the open forum, SGA President Jay Perry explained the SGA Handbook, senator training packet, and parliamentary procedures. This year, senators will be expected to publicize their availability, host at least one “town hall meeting,” and fulfill other basic senatorial duties.
The Senate passed a bill to confirm and seat Nick Fagan as the 2000-2001 Student Government Parliamentarian. Fagan will guide and check parliamentary procedures.
The bill stated that, “Mr. Fagan’s services as a parliamentarian would prove invaluable to the Senate, especially in his ability to provide unbiased opinions on the procedures and motions made when conducting the Senate’s business.”
In another bill, the Senate confirmed and seated the 2000-2001 Student Government Association Jesuit Affiliate, Barney Barry, S.J., to serve as a nonvoting member of the Senate.
According to the bill, Barry’s “credentials to hold this position are only strengthened by the fact that he has served in numerous key positions on campus through the Department of Campus Ministry and other advisory roles.”
During the officer’s reports, Nick Sandiego, of the recently formed Graduate and Professional Student Association, spoke about co-sponsoring speakers with the Great Issues Committee and a week-long blood drive.
SGA Academic Vice President Becky Shelby explained her goals for the year, including improving Webstar, implementing a student mentor program for Madrid students and producing faculty course ratings.
Freshmen seeking to fill the six first-year student seats will be appointed on Sept. 27.
The 2000-2001 SGA Inaugural Ceremony will be held Tuesday, Sept. 19, at 4 p.m. at the Laclede Town Park.
