To the Editor:
I don’t want to go on a rant, but what’s with Democrats these days? Everyone to the left has gotten jumped up in the last few weeks, both at SLU and nationally. Frankly, all this publicity over nothing is annoying. You guys need to grow up and let some things pass. Following are some specifics that are particularly over-hyped.
What’s with all of these protesters? In L.A., something like half a million people protested against making it a felony to be an illegal alien. What in the world? Like the great, vast majority of us, my ancestors did things the legal way. Are you really going to say that it’s okay for people to simply come here illegally, and that it should not be a crime?
So, we had a veteran’s march from Mobile, Ala., to New Orleans. According to a crumpled copy of People’s Weekly World I found in the trash bin, the headlines ran something like “Make Levees, not war.” Of course, a report surfaced somewhere that informed the President 48 hours beforehand that the levees would break under Katrina. What could anyone do? It’s a hurricane, people! Any engineer will tell you it’s really hard to reinforce any levee under level-5 hurricane winds and water levels. It’s no one’s fault.
Even at SLU, we have our activists. Coming up is Atlas week and an event entitled “Political and Social Activism in a Global World.” When was the last time we had one entitled “Fiscal Conservatism in a Spend-Crazy Government?” OK, meet me somewhere in between. For my rant’s finale: I’ve heard this term “social justice” going around a lot, and I’m convinced there’s neither justice nor society in mind. Most people can’t even define it suitably. All of these cooked-up colorful euphemisms beguile the reality of the situation.
