In Defense of Being Active

To the Editor:

I must apologize on behalf of Mr. Andrew Baworowsky if he in any way implied that his views are those of an informed representative of the right.? As a conservative, I am worried that some of the claims in his letter last week will be wrongfully attributed to conservatism, rather than rightly assigned solely to the letter’s author.? Some irrational assertions were made that I will address in this response.

First, if we are going to address the problem of immigration, we must first get rid of our egos.? Taking credit for one’s ancestors’ legal passage into this country by referring to oneself as part of the “great, vast majority” is of no significance to the problem at hand.? Our solution to the growing issue concerning illegal immigration needs to be lawful and practical, but it does not need to be rooted in American intolerance and egotism.

Also, it is one thing to criticize extremism, but it is another entirely to assert that “social justice” has “neither justice, nor society in mind.”? There are a number of issues in this genre that need to be addressed, and there are others that are given too much attention-either way, trivializing the entire cause and effort without qualification does nothing for progress.? We must intelligently and thoroughly address each issue encompassed by “social justice,” and avoid hasty generalizations.

Finally, I did not appreciate Mr. Baworowsky’s attempt to demean the efforts of Atlas week or all “activists” on campus (claiming loathingly that we have them “even at Saint Louis University”). If one is really interested in promoting his or her cause, perhaps he or she ought to consider doing so actively.? I see nothing wrong with that, and I also see nothing wrong with Atlas week or its events.? Raising awareness and gathering information from an array of sources is one of the best ways to expand and enhance our grasp of human events.? The other solution, of course, is to continue to rant aimlessly with no end in mind-to, effectively, complain about complaining in true hypocritical fashion.? It is my personal preference that we avoid the latter by pursuing truth and information, rather than continuing to wallow in ignorance.
