Una performs “Vagina Monologues” next weekend

UNA will perform The Vagina Monologues Feb. 9 and 10 at the Phyllis Wheatley Heritage Center, 2711 Locust.

For the last four years, Una, SLU’s student feminist organization, has staged productions of The Vagina Monologues at on campus venues.

The Monologues have been the foundation of the V-Day movement.

Performances have raised and donated more than $30 million for charitable anti-violence against women organizations.

“The Monologues serves as a catalyst to raise awareness about violence against women through the use of real life personal accounts,” said student-elected V-Day 2007 Director Rachel Buckler.

Last semester, UNA was advised by administrators not to hold the production again this year. The group opted to take the show off campus.

On Jan. 31, the Student Government Association allocated Una $1512 for the second performance on Feb. 10.

“The spot funding money will be used to pay for the venue, stage, and chairs for the second night.?

It will also be used for the added publicity needed to publicize the off campus event, and the vans to be used for student shuttles,” said Mary Becker, the organization’s treasurer.

Shuttles will be running from Georgetown parking lot behind Griesedieck Hall from 5:45 p.m. until 7 p.m., and will return students to campus at 9:30 p.m.

29 Saint Louis University students are taking part in the controversial performance to benefit local charities and the V-Day campaign.

“The first and most difficult obstacle was determining where to begin after having such a pivotal decision passed down from the administration. The challenges began with an attempt to get questions answered regarding the decision,” said Buckler.

“Beyond that,?the administration went back and forth a lot, concerning the extent to which we could publicize, prepare for and even discuss the event on campus.?

It was difficult to go forward with the event (even off campus) when we could barely inform other students about what was going on,” Buckler said.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door, or in the north lobby of the Busch Student Center between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., or by contacting UNA members at [email protected].

All of the proceeds will be donated to the Karen House and the Womens Safe House.
