Student Sympathizes with Soldier

To the Editor:

As I peruse the usual University News, I find myself in discontent to the world that we live in, specifically the feelings of this country. Fitting the stereotypical norm of a college student, I believe in freedom of speech and expressing such matters. In fact, I am enacting my rights in this free country as I write without hesitation. I fear that without hesitation too many people abuse their freedoms.

It is pertinent to note that the last time that the freedom of speech was severely, legally limited was in 1918 with the Schneck vs. United States Supreme Court case where speech could be restricted if it creates “clear and present danger.” Flashing forward almost 100 years where disregard for respect of the U.S. is clear in numerous numbers, the presentation of disbeliefs and dislikes of the government’s action have become dangerous to our society. This hazard is not marked by a triangle or skull and cross-bone, but each and every disrepute of honor and gratitude that should be given to all soldiers.

I find myself using the term “given” extremely loosely because a normal representation would be that of an act of granting. I find troubles stating that I give to soldiers. Where as, I only reek the benefits of their sacrifices. Having a brother-in-law, Chris, who is currently serving his second tour of duty in Iraq, I have been able to see first hand the vast amounts of sacrifices that soldiers make. Chris was not at home for the birth of his third child; he was not at home for the wonderful words that his second daughter spoke for the first time; he was not at home safe and sound.

Learning is something that many college students seek to accomplish, but I never thought I would receive this kind of first hand education. I only wish that other members of this society would have the wisdom and knowledge that has been imparted to me by a soldier. Although, this conclusion was not reached without a firm foundation of examples of ignorance. I only wish that the foundation was not supported as strongly as it is.

In the recent article “Anyone But a Soldier: Patriotism vs. Punk Music” by Mr. McCarthy, the Street Dogs extorted the ignorance of the country that leads to speech and action without hesitation. Unwavering admiration should be yielded to our servicemen, but yet a drum stick is the only thing given to this man of honor. Mr. McCarthy asks to, “Imagine I[he] was a minority […] who was attacked for expressing disapproval with those who bashed my[his] lifestyle. Would you care then?” My hesitation is not imagining his hypothetical situation, but imagining the real situation that soldiers in Iraq are faced with. They are not the ones who possess and express negligence as Mr. McColgan did.

I care NOW Shawn McCarthy.
