While the debate over the war in Iraq continues and Congress prepares to vote on another multibillion dollar supplement, peace activists in St. Louis organized a five-day 24-hour vigil outside of Senator Claire McCaskill’s office in the Delmar Loop . Last night, I had the opportunity to join in that vigil along with a group of Saint Louis University students. As I stood there and listened, I heard some of the students talking about all of the reading and class work they had to do. Obviously, they were concerned about their responsibility as students. In the midst of all of these responsibilities, however, these students had made time to stand in solidarity with others advocating for an end to war and restoration of peace. As I drove home, it occurred to me that the experience of participating in this vigil was a part of the educational experience for these students. The stated purpose of a Saint Louis University education is to “prepare men and women for service to others.” That preparation occurs both in the classroom and on the streets. I thank and commend those students who made the time to participate in this vigil and encourage all members of the St. Louis University community to take advantage of opportunities to join with others in advocating for peace and justice.
