Success at Homecoming

While we?believe that The University News ought to objectively comment about anything it sees fit, and editorials are an expression of opinion, we were troubled by the inaccuracies included in this editorial. For instance, the author indicated that the week’s activities should have been included in more than just the SGA mailer.?They were. The primary gripe of the editorial’s author was that they themselves were not aware of the Homecoming Week activities, an ironic criticism since, in addition to the numerous other methods we used to send the message to students, we advertised the entire week’s activities in a full-page ad in the previous edition of UNews. Shouldn’t the The University News staff be reading its own paper?

The proof is the success of Homecoming.?The Guster concert was the highest attendance in memory, with over 4,800 attendees.?Other programs for Homecoming were also successfully attended. The blood drive was so successful it extended 2.5 hours longer than anticipated from the high volume of donors.

In the big picture, we believe that last week’s editorial illustrates the kind of dynamic that has been troubling students about the The University News. When the newspaper sees its role as vague criticizer of campus programs without specific or helpful solutions, they needlessly alienate the very people who comprise their readership and, in essence, feed the very problem about which they complain. If apathy is the true problem, don’t we make it worse by waiting for someone to do something and then tearing them down before their program has even finished?

Overall,?Homecoming 2007 was a huge success, and?we thank?everyone who came out to support the events.?We look forward to continued success of our events throughout the year!

Sincerely,
Ainsley Onstott – SAB President
Janelle Densberger – SAB Adviser
Dan Frierdich – SAB Co-Adviser
