To the Editor:
I read with disgust the comments made by Archbishop Burke regarding Men’s Basketball Coach Rick Majerus’ personal beliefs relative to “pro-choice” while attending a political rally. Majerus has a First Amendment right to free speech. What he said was not as a representative of Saint Louis University or of the Roman Catholic Church.
Burke should keep religion and politics separate and not chastise someone because of their personal opinions even if they are against the beliefs of Burke or the Catholic Church. SLU is independent of the Archdiocese of St. Louis and should ignore Burke’s suggestion that the University take some action against Rick Majerus. Also, as an institution of higher learning, a university should be open to diverse opinions even if it is a private Jesuit-run institution.
