To the Editor:
I graduated from Saint Louis University in 1998 with a bachelor’s degree in biology. I owe a lot to SLU and very much appreciate the education I received during my four years at the university.
That having been said, I believe that Men’s Basketball Coach Rick Majerus should be disciplined, perhaps even fired, for his recent comments supporting abortion and stem-cell research.
Majerus has free will just as you and I do. Even though he claims to be Catholic, he can still choose to reject the teachings of the church that Christ founded.
That having been said, he is a high profile member of the staff at SLU. As such, even if he is not officially representing the University, his public comments reflect on SLU. Indeed, they cause great scandal.
Majerus certainly has a right to his opinions. But he does not have a right to be a member of the staff of a Catholic institution while contradicting the teachings of the Catholic Church. I would hope he has the integrity to resign from his position at Saint Louis University if he insists on promoting views that are clearly against Catholic teaching.
