Una will present the play “A Memory a Monologue a Rant and a Prayer” tonight at 8 p.m. MMRP is a play designed to raise awareness about violence against women. It is a series of monologues, written by prominent writers, about their own experiences of violence against women. The show starts at 8 p.m. at The Bluebird (2706 Olive St.), only several blocks east of campus. Shuttles will provide transportation beginning at 6:30, leaving from behind Griesedieck. All proceeds from the show will go to Karen House, a shelter for women and children.

Una is proud to present this show after weathering weeks of obstacles and controversy. SLU’s administration chose not to allow MMRP to shown on campus this year due to concerns that it would offend Catholic sensibilities. Administrators objected specifically to the use of the word “vagina” in one of the monologues, and one graphic account of a rape in another.

But these elements are necessary for any effective presentation on this issue. Violence against women is a serious problem which demands brutal honesty. It is wrong to use our religious identity as an excuse to turn a blind eye to the suffering of abused women.

It is also inappropriate for SLU to suppress a student activity, or and idea, simply because some factions of the catholic community would find it offensive. This is a university. A plurality of voices is absolutely essential to a good academic environment. SLU should not deny its students the right to free discourse on social issues.

I am confident that in the future, a compromise can be reached which will better serve SLU’s students. In the meantime, come see MMRP tonight.
