Senate talks scholarships, impeachment

Last night was the fifth meeting of the 36th General Assembly of the Student Government Association. Senators discussed three bills at the meeting.

The first bill, which passed unanimously, named law student Steve Donner as the new graduate school senator.

“You should look at him as role model, and if anyone wants to go to law school, talk to this guy,” said Administrative Vice President Michael Harriss.

The second bill discussed who the future members of the selection committee for the Upper-Class Scholarship would be.

Per the provisions of the scholarship’s endowment agreement, SGA’s financial and academic vice presidents will sit on the committee, as well as the directors from the Department of Student Life, the Cross Cultural Center and the Office of Scholarship and Financial Aid. The bill passed unanimously, and the committee will have its first meeting next week to begin the process of choosing scholarship recipients.

The third, and final, bill would have altered SGA’s impeachment procedures. The bill proposed changing the process so that a senator with two unexcused or three excused absences would be required to appear before the Committee of Internal Affairs. The committee would have to reach a unanimous decision as to whether or not the senator should be impeached.

The bill was met with contention. Some senators felt as though the requirement for a unanimous vote instead of a simple majority was unfair; others approved of it because it would save time for the Senate as a whole.

Sen. Danny Rooney said that the unanimous vote is not the final word and “if absences are causing someone to not be able to fulfill their duties, another senator can still write up their own bill and bring the senator before the Senate.”

The bill was tabled for one week and will be brought up for discussion again at next week’s meeting.
