Let Us Introduce You to … Stacy Vojta

In a world where young people are often described as politically apathetic, Stacy Vojta’s example is a stark contradiction to this popular stereotype.

As Saint Louis University’s current president of College Democrats, Vojta works to educate and engage SLU students in politics on the campus, city and statewide levels.

Since before her college years, Vojta has harbored a passion for politics.

When she arrived at SLU she actively sought opportunities to pursue her interests.

“I have always been politically active. I looked for the College Dems at a school fair,” Vojta said. “I just knew it was something I wanted to be a part of.”

“While there are some who are apathetic, I think SLU students are definitely interested. For last year’s elections, we registered 2,000 students to vote. I don’t believe that most people are naturally apathetic,” Vojta said. “They just need groups like [College Democrats and College Republicans] to become involved.”

College Democrats is aware of its role in the student body’s political involvement, and this year the organization has specific plans on its agenda.

“We focus a lot on registering to vote and the voting process. Especially because Missouri is such a crucial state nationally, we try to get students registered and interested in the voting process,” Vojta said.

The U.S. Senate race will be a topic of focus as well.

“We are going to work hard to educate students about the importance of the midterm election. That’s our big goal right now,” she said.

Being part of a political organization in the city of St. Louis adds a unique facet to the experience.

“We do a lot with the city Democrats, the elected officials and other volunteers. We go to their monthly meetings and help with their agendas,” Vojta said. “We’re involved with city politics-being part of a city allows us to be involved not just on campus but on a grander level. We regularly work with St. Louis Young Democrats and other outside national groups.”

Overall, Vojta cites her involvement in College Democrats, especially within the context of a dynamic metropolitan environment, as very beneficial for her in her future career.

“I’ve been able to make connections with elected officials, political contacts and people who will help me build my career,” she said. “I’ve worked on campaigns on the citywide and statewide levels. Such experience has helped me formulate my career path.”

College Democrats meet Tuesdays at 7 p.m. and welcome anyone interested in learning about or raising awareness for important issues affecting our country.
