My fellow Saint Louisans, be you temporarily inhabiting this sickly humid city or, like myself, victimized by the “Midwestern Curse,” destined to spend the rest of your life here, I come to offer guidance.
Any who have spent even the shortest amount of time here, especially those from far more active cities, have, in utter despair, asked, “What is there to do here?” The answer? Sadly, not much.
Aside from drinking at one place or another, St. Louis’ best offering is its sports scene. This is after all the city that The Sporting News dubbed “The Best Sports City” in 2000. Annually our representatives in the ranks of the pros put forth impressive efforts and prove themselves true contenders, which is pretty impressive for a smaller market city such as ours.
First, I give you the Central Division leading Cardinals, who, if that pesky strike is avoided, will most certainly partake in a very exciting pennant race this fall.
With the acquisition of a true baseball star, Scott Rolen, the immergence a MVP caliber superstar, Albert Pujols, and a lineup that might be the best in baseball, the Cards pack an explosive punch that is exciting to watch.
I can think of few things more enjoyable than spending a breezy late-summer night, perhaps sipping a beer or soda, whichever you prefer, watching the beloved boys of summer out on the perfectly manicured bright green grass, inevitably producing moments of both ecstasy and agony.
A visit to Busch stadium, which may not be around much longer, is mandatory for any who spend a summer in St. Louis.
And if the season does go on, and the Cardinals make it to the post-season, watch out. This team, if they are able to maintain their consistency, avoid injury, and keep the bats smoking, has all the tools necessary to bring home a World Championship.
Ah yes, and the boys of fall are just around the corner. The “Greatest Show on Turf,” is perfecting itself for another run at the Super Bowl. Sunday September 8 they open their season in Denver. And yes, the Rams are favored to take it all this year.
There is no doubt that the Rams have been not only the best team in the National Football League over the last three seasons, but they have above all been the most exciting team to watch. They have an offense that is nothing short of brilliant. One dare not even blink their eyes lest they miss one the Rams traditional 23-second scoring drives.
If you are lucky enough to have the opportunity to attend one of the Rams home games, football fan or not, do it.
I dare say nothing in St. Louis can compare to the intensity and energy that circulates through the Edward Jones Dome during the cold winter Sundays. And it’s never to late to jump on the bandwagon. Its too much fun to miss out on, believe me.
That’s what I have to offer you, play ball. And if the boys of summer go on strike, dare I ask, are you ready for some football?
St. Louis is the best sports city in America right now, and we are fortunate enough to be here to witness it. Don’t miss the boat.
