FIELD HOCKEY
–Team Prepares For NORPAC
The SLU field hockey team wrapped up their regular season with two losses, finishing with a record of 5-10. The Bills were downed 2-0 by Davis and Elkins this past Sunday and fell again on Monday to the University of Pacific, 3-2.
Lucy Durbin and Kristen Burich put the Bills on the board in the second half Monday with single goals each. The Bills outscored Pacific 2-1 in the second half. Durbin and Becky Brunner both had assists against Pacific.
The Billikens are now looking forward to the Northern Pacific Conference (NORPAC) Tournament. Coach Shannon West said in a press release, “We haven’t seen a real standout and realize that it’s anybody’s tournament to win.”
CROSS COUNTRY
–C-USA Is Coming Up
This past weekend, the SLU cross country team competed in the Washington University Mini Meet. Alicia Hamilton was the Billikens top finisher with a time of 20:54 over 5,000 meters, placing her in 22nd. Jen Hartman and Megan Irwin finished 25th and 26th, respectively.
David Maxwell was the men’s top finisher with a time of 16:30 over 5,000 meters, good enough for 28th place. Pete Mosher was the second SLU finisher with a time of 16:52.1, placing him in 38th position.
The Bills are preparing for the Conference USA Championship meet on Saturday, Oct. 30, in Charlotte, N.C.
GOLF
–SLU Finishes In 5th
The SLU golf team finished in fifth place out of 15 teams at a tournament hosted by Southwest Missouri State on Monday and Tuesday. SLU’s team score over three rounds was 313-313-308-934, which put the Bills 39 strokes behind the winner, Southwest Missouri State.
Scott Fann tied for 11th place in the tourney, carding a 73-80-75-228. Adam Trower finished in 31st place with a score 81-79-76-236. Justin Haupt played well in his first tournament of the fall. He finished in 38th place with a three round total of 237.
The golf team is done for the season. The squad’s best result was a second place finish at the Bradley Intercollegiate. The team will resume play in February of 2000.
RUGBY
–Charity Game Versus Wash. U.
The SLU rugby club plays Washington University on Saturday, Oct. 30, at 7 p.m. at St. Gerard’s in West County. the proceeds from the event will go toward a fund that is helping to build the parish a new gymnasium.
To get to St. Gerard’s, take Highway 40 west to Interstate 270 south. From there, get off at the Dougherty Ferry exit and head east. The school and athletic fields are on the corner of Dougherty Ferry and Ballas Road.
Admission to the game is $3. Food and drinks will be served.
The rugby club is 5-1 on the season and has two more matches left on its schedule.
SWIMMING
–Teams Finish 4th
The swimming and diving teams took home a fourth place finish in the four team field at the University of Northern Iowa co-ed Panther 16 Event Invitational last weekend.
Freshman diver Jenny Hurst was impressive in the one-and three meter categories, taking home first place in both. Freshman Kristina Kora was also impressive with her second place finish in the 200-yard backstroke and her third place finish in the 100 yard backstroke.
Junior Jason Difani was dominating with his first place finishes in the 50-yard and 100- yard free style race. He also took home second place in the 100-yard butterfly.
SLU will have some time to rest before their next meet at the Eastern Illinois Invitational on Nov. 5-6.
