Respect Black History

To the Editor: When the second semester started here at Saint Louis University, I returned on the earliest day possible, which was Jan. 13.  The first day of classes, which was Jan. 17, I was passing the mailboxes inside Griesedieck Hall to go to class.  I noticed that there was a bulletin board that displayed the faces of recognizable African Americans and the title above their pictures was “Black History Month.”  I felt elated that someone had taken the time to publicly honor Black History Month. Yet, a couple of days passed and I noticed that the “B” was gone that belonged “Black.” Now the bulletin read “lack History Month.”   I guess some idiot thought it would be funny to mock the African American students here at Saint Louis University and African American history. Not only was this a distasteful act, but nothing was done about it for seven days, a week.  For seven days the African American students and our history was on display as “lack History Month”.   There were several African-American students who brought it to the attention of the director of the Griesedieck Complex, that they wanted something to be done about the impudent display, but nothing was done.   I went into the Griesedieck director’s office on Tuesday, January 24th and asked her when the bulletin board would be fixed.  She offered a meaningless apology and told me it would be fixed by the afternoon and that she had already asked two people to fix the bulletin board, but they had not.  She told me that she guessed she would fix it herself. Later on that day, I noticed that all of the wordswere gone from the bulletin board.   Eventually, the bulletin board was fixed on Thursday Jan. 26. Who can the African American students turn to when we feel disrespected?  Obviously, it is not the director of Griesedieck Hall.   Why did the bulletin board go unfixed so long, after complaints from the students who were offended?  I am writing this letter because I want it to be printed in the next University News.  I also would like someone to please answer my questions.  Debra JohnsonFreshman, College of Arts and Sciences
